Liberia. Fire disaster near Monrovia
On Tuesday morning October 16, 2018, fire gutted 15 homes within the Neegangbo Community on 14th Street, Sinkor, Monrovia leaving 44 Family Heads homeless.
A team from LRRRC headed by its Executive Director, Rev. Festus R. B. Logan including Deputy Executive as well as the Director for Administration, Madam Karpo Stewart-Weah and Deputy Executive Director for Operation, Mr. Alphonso Wallace to ascertain the level of damage caused by the fire disaster.
As the Government of Liberia lead agency responsible to provide assistance to victims of natural disaster victims and internally displaced persons among others, the LRRRC Boss disclosed to fire victims that the Government of Liberia will collaborate with the Liberian National Red Cross, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and other relevant agencies to provide relief assistance to the 44 family heads who are affected by the fire disaster.
One of the Landlords of the fire incident, Mr. Moses Gray disclosed to LRRRC Information Office that 15 Zinc Shacks were gutted by the fire incident.This information was also confirmed by Neegangbo Community Chairman, Mr. Moses Willicor and added that no casualties were reported. He also disclosed that he has set-up a committee to work along with the National Fire Service to investigate the Fire incident to establish the cause of the fire.
LRRRC Conducts One-day Protection Training on Rights and Obligation of Refugee
The Executive Director of Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), Rev. Festus R. B. Logan has reminded Ivorian refugees to remain law abiding and pay heed to the training on the rights and obligations as refugees.
Speaking at a one-day Protection Training on the Rights and Obligation of Ivorian Refugees, the LRRRC Boss challenged the refugees to pay special attention to the facilitators as they impact knowledge that will be beneficial to them.
Facilitating on the topic: “Rights and Obligation”, Attorney Stanley Makor who is also UNHCR Liberia Associate Protection Officer, informed the refugees about the durable solutions that are available to them; including local integration, voluntary repatriation and resettlement.
He added that third countries that were once accepting refugees for resettlement are no longer accepting refugees for this purpose. He warned them not to engage in self-resettlement in third countries. Mr. Makor urged the refugees not to engage in violating the laws of the country they find themselves in. “There are certain things you can’t do.
Don’t take someone property,” Mr. Makor stressed.The participants who are mainly urban Ivorian refugees, were drilled through the following topics: Rights and Obligation, Summary- Liberia Refugee Act (LRA) Summary, Facts on Refugee Regime including questions and answers.Messiers Joseph S. Cooper, LRRRC Senior Protection Officer, Darrell Cholopleh, LRRRC Protection Officer and UNHCR Liberia Associate Protection Officer served as facilitators. In closing remarks, the Chairman of the urban Ivorian refugees, Mr. Gounanou Gouli Patrice thanked LRRRC Management for enabling the Ivorian refugees acquired knowledge on their rights and obligation.
He appealed to LRRRC to conduct further training programs for them.On behalf of LRRRC Management, Its Deputy Executive for Operation admonished staff of the Protection Section for organizing the one-day training on rights and obligation for Ivorian refugees. He also expressed thanks and appreciation to the refugees for utilizing the opportunity to learn their rights and obligation.
